Fall Fun!

Fall involves lots of food! At least it does here in the great Pacific Northwest.  And by food, I mean the canning of.  Obviously Washington is known for its apples, and there are lots of those (!), but lots of other stuff as well!  At first it started off small and manageable.  We had church friends who weren't going to pick all the fruit on their trees, so we went over and picked it and started canning it.  Then we heard of people in the community who weren't going to use all their fruit.  So we picked that too.  Then, while we were still in the midst of that, our friend Julie got a job at a farm stand.  And took home unsellable but perfectly edible items boxes of food.  Every night.  So yeah, that was my life for a few weeks :)  However, having little to no experience with this, I was the trusty sous canner, mostly in charge of prepping the fruit.  Lots of cutting and peeling and coring and shucking and more peeling and chopping.  But we got so many delicious things out of our labor, so it was totally worth it!  Lots of jam and salsa and chutney and apple butter and applesauce and pearsauce and more!  Also, we've been doing some longer hikes.  So here are pictures of those two activites :)
